Eating black eyed peas on New Year’s Day to bring good luck, is an old tradition in our family. My dad is 96 now and I’ll be taking him some peas for his lunch tomorrow. Of course you can’t have peas, unless you have something like turnip greens and cornbread to go with them))
If you haven’t prepared turnip greens before, here’s a little video I did a while back showing how to prepare them.
To cook the peas, the first thing you have to do is soak them in water for a few hours or overnight This doesn’t have to be done, but they will cook faster if you can. You can also cook them in a crock pot over night as well. There are lots of different ways of cooking them.
Cover the peas with water and add something to season them like bacon. I was fresh out of bacon so I used left over Christmas ham. This is a good way to get rid of those last few scraps that you’re tired of already))
Cook on low to medium heat until tender and use salt and pepper to taste.
Dried peas are a good source iron and fiber. To spice up the taste a bit, you can sprinkle a few drops of pepper sauce to give them a little bite.
What is one of your family traditions for the New Year?
